Step-by-Step Recipe

Prepare the Dough for the Dal Farra recipe:

1. In a large mixing bowl, add 1 cup of whole wheat flour.

2. Add 0.5 tsp salt and 1 tsp oil to the flour.

3. Gradually add 0.5 cup of water, little by little, and knead the mixture into a soft, smooth dough. The dough should be firm yet pliable.

4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and set it aside for 15-20 minutes while you prepare the stuffing.

Instructions for Chana Dal Stuffing:

1. Drain the 0.5 cup soaked Chana Dal (soaked in water for 2 hours) and transfer it to a grinder.

2. Coarsely grind the Chana Dal without adding water. The mixture should not be too fine.

3. In a bowl, combine the ground Chana Dal with 2 finely chopped green chilies, 1 tsp grated ginger, 2 tbsp fresh coriander, 0.5 tsp salt, 1 pinch asafoetida/hing, 0.25 tsp kashmiri red chili powder, 0.25 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, and 0.5 tsp amchur powder.

4. Mix all the ingredients well. Adjust seasoning if needed. The stuffing is now ready.

How to make Farra | Chana Dal Fara Recipe:

1. Divide the dough into small lemon-sized balls.

2. Using a rolling pin, take one dough ball and roll it out into a small circle or oval. Ensure the rolled dough is not too thick or too thin.

3. Place 1-2 teaspoons of the prepared Chana Dal stuffing in the center of the dough.

4. Fold the dough over the stuffing to form a semi-circle and seal the edges by pressing them firmly. You can use a little water to help seal the edges if needed.

5. Repeat the process for the remaining dough and stuffing.

6. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Make sure there is enough water to submerge the Fara completely.

7. Once the water starts boiling, gently slide the prepared Fara into the water one by one. Be careful not to overcrowd the pot; you can boil them in batches if needed.

8. Cover it and let it boil for 4 minutes on high flame.

9. After that flip them over and partially cover them. Let the Fara cook in boiling water for about 12-15 minutes. They will start to float to the surface when fully cooked.

10. Once cooked, carefully remove the Fara with a slotted spoon and drain any excess water.

11. Let them cool slightly before proceeding to the next step.

12. Cut into 2-3 pieces and you can serve as it is with any chutney or dip. Or you can fry them.

Fry the Steamed Fara:

1. If you prefer a crispy, fried version of Dal Fara, heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan.

2. Add a pinch of asafoetida and 0.5 tsp mustard seeds. Let them crackle.

3. Further, add 0.5 tsp Kashmiri red chili powder and stir for a few seconds.

4. Add the steamed Farras to the pan and toss gently, ensuring they are evenly coated with the tempered spices.

5. Cook on low heat for 2 minutes, turning occasionally until the Farras develop a golden, crispy outer layer.

6. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot.

  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Oil
